The Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 is known as Super Mario Lost Levels in North America and is similar to the first Super Mario Bros. 1 but is much more difficult. The American version of Super Mario Bros. 2 plays very differently from the previous Super Mario Bros. game or any other Mario platformer for that matter; Mario and co. can not kill enemies by merely jumping on them, they must throw something at them to eliminate them. This difference is because the game was originally a completely different game in Japan called Doki Doki Panic, but the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was deemed to be too difficult and similar to the original so Nintendo took Doki Doki Panic and swapped the main characters out with Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad. Despite these differences, various aspects of the game have made their way into Mario canon like Peach's ability to float, Bob-ombs, and Shy Guys. The Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was made playable for North Americans for the first time with Super Mario All Stars. On the flip side, Japanese players who didn't play Doki Doki Panic already could play the American version of Super Mario Bros. 2, called Super Mario USA in Japan, with the same game. The game also has a level based off of it in Super Smash Bros. Playable Characters: Mario Luigi Princess_Peach Toad Antagonists: Birdo Wart Mouser Shy_Guy Phanto Bob-omb Crossover: Super_Smash_Bros.
