It was animated by Studio_Saru, was directed by Yuasa Masaaki and was written by Oukouchi Ichirou with a soundtrack composed by Ushio Kensuke. It was notably the first major Japanese anime production to premiere on Netflix. Yuasa noted that the original manga was published in a shounen magazine, which placed some restrictions on what original creator Nagai Gou was allowed to show in the manga, but Nagai's post shounen magazine work was much more extreme and Yuasa approached this adaptation with the mindset of "What if Nagai was allowed to tell the story the way he wanted with no restrictions?" Out of all the anime adaptations of Devilman, this one is notably the most faithful in that it covers the manga's entire plot. However, it has its own unique elements. The anime updates the setting to the 2010s and the character designs, technology, and soundtrack have been changed to reflect this. The anime notably features freestyle raps performed by characters in-universe. The raps were supervised by rapper Ken the 390 who played Wamu in the anime. The raps function as a sort of narration/commentary on the story's events and Yuasa chose to include rappers because he felt that "rappers are the people who speak their minds today." While Yuasa's previous works had received critical acclaim, this series quickly became his breakthrough hit, selling over 2367 Blu-ray copies in its release week. It helped expose the Devilman franchise to a wider international audience with over 90% of its viewers being from outside Japan. Original creator Nagai Gou and the writer of the first anime adaptation Tsuji Masaki also praised this adaptation.
