I fail to see how this is role reversal. Maria is still the big strong hero, and Prince Pear is still the one needing saving.

It's a role reversal because it's the female saving the male, not the other way around.

That I know of, it's normally a Princess and not a Prince being saved, so yes, it still is role_reversal (for the matter, Female Peach rescuing male Mario would also be role_reversal albeit for a different reason).
What Anon #1 and Anon #3 mean is costume_switch/clothes_switch.
