After reading the manga and seeing the movie, honestly, the Mimics from the movie look a lot more menacing.

Edge of Tomorrow is pretty far removed from the source material in general, but a lot of the changes benefit it well, and the Mimics were one of those changes. Much more terrifying having a near-formless mass of metallic tentacles going after you that can effortlessly kill you in a single hit than those weird black balls seen in the manga.

If by "far removed" you mean they changed the characters and the ending then sure. But for an American adaption of a japanese franchise they did an incredibly good job staying true to the source.
