Keep in mind that most publishers are not AAA companies who have giant teams that can focus on everything. For smaller teams, I would rather sacrifice graphical quality for better gameplay, than better graphics with boring gameplay. AAA companies have no excuses, and should do both.
Graphics are important, but they are not the most important thing about a game. For you, it might be different, but to me, gameplay is more important than graphics. Everyone has different preferences, and that is OK.

This is not where I was going. Fast-paced games are better with faster hardware, even offline. Newer console is faster hardware. And now that every console is basically a pc, next gen will give you backwards compatibility. So you'll be able to play older games on faster consoles. BUT to answer your counterargument, why don't you just look at GTA5 online? Don't old gen and current gen use the same servers? So yeah, the unfair advantage, due to newer console, is a thing.
Don't know why you're even bringing it up. It has nothing to do with the issue at hand. Good gameplay was important for the old gen, remains important for the current gen and any new gen to come. Perhaps your argument is that you're satisfied with the older and cheaper games. After all, old gen barely gets any new titles released for it. Oh yeah, now that all consoles in the current gen are basically shitty PCs, they are extremely similar, so even smaller dev companies have no excuse for shitty optimization and can put more effort into graphics.
