Questions about Danbooru, Safebooru, and Gelbooru
Posted on: 03/18/16 12:52AM

So there's a clone account of the danbooru website that posts any posts posted to it here, so I was wondering couldn't they create clone accounts for everyone on danbooru to here as well? That way if I uploaded something to danbooru my clone account here would 'upload' it and everyone would know that Lord Flowers is spreading mayonnaise and milk for everyone? I mean I have a clone account on Safebooru, so why don't I have a clone account on Gelbooru? I don't exceptionally get the point to uploading to danbooru either. I mean I know the owners of the website want people to donate to their cause, all and wonderful, but say being able to see censored tags on Danbooru... you know... because everything that is uploaded on Danbooru, is also uploaded here so... not making a whole lot of sense in that department. You guys understand where I'm getting at? Now SAY this was the reverse, everything uploaded to gelbooru would be uploaded to Danbooru while posts uploaded to Danbooru were kept separate THEN that would make sense to add that as a bonus but, I mean really anyone who wants to see the content on Danbooru just has to go here.

Danbooru has arguably better software for their site, (We're worken' on it.) I think more people might know about it because it's been around longer, has way more mods, custodians and translators etc. and the option to pay for ad-free use of the site. They also have higher standards of quality for their uploads than we do and perhaps some users prefer it that way.

If Danbooru is the AT&T of boorus (It was also the first booru I think) then Gelbooru is Verizon (Buddies with AT&T but it doesn't show) Safebooru is Bellcom the me-too service and Xbooru is Boost Mobile, the underground booru the others don't talk about.

To start out with, which safebooru are you talking about? If you're talking about safebooru.donmai.us, you in fact do not have a shadow account. You Danbooru and safe booru accounts are the same account. Those sites are actually the same site, it's just that one subdomain automatically triggers a blacklist.

The Danbooru bot here is run by us, not by Danbooru. While we're very loosely affiliated and once did actually host Danbooru for albert for a while, our software wasn't even designed for the same platform. Unlike Danbooru/safebooru, we are not the same site. The way user accounts work, a shadow account system wouldn't really work out.

Putting aside all the technical details why it wouldn't work, let's say there's a user on Danbooru uploads artwork. They know about gelbooru, but don't care - they like where they're at and never plan to use gelbooru at all.

Let's say a user on gelbooru coincidentally uses the same username for online services. They register an account with that name and start uploading art. Whooops, now we have two users uploading artwork under the same name.

Let's say the Danbooru user starts uploading a whole bunch of doujin pages, which violate Gelbooru's ToS. They don't care - the don't violate Danbooru's ToS, and they don't plan on using gelbooru. But without stuff being uploaded under the Danbooru username, we have absolutely no way of telling that they came in from Danbooru. Eventually that username gets banned - whooops, the non-Danbooru user and all the IPs they ever used are now permanently banned from gelbooru.

Let's say the gelbooru user instead was the one that uploaded ToS violations and got banned. Whooops, the Danbooru user's posts no longer import.

Maybe we shouldn't let users register user accounts that exist on Danbooru, then? Except we have absolutely no access to their user database. And what if the username gets registered on gelbooru first? They also have no access to our user database, nor any reason at all to care that a username was registered on Gelbooru. That's putting aside it being unfair to reserve a username to someone who's never going to use the site. And what if the Danbooru user has a change of heart and decides to use Gelbooru? They can't claim their account either. We have absolutely no way to validate that it's them. Remember, we have absolutely no access to their user DB, which means we cannot see what IPs a user uses, and there's no way we're going to ask for their Danbooru password to authenticate.

Basically, it's not gonna work.
