Comment Voting and the Suggestability of the Human Mind

In my opinion, voting does not accurately reflect the quality of a comment this is why:

Today, a thing happened to me. I was browsing the comments on an image, and one of the comments was that typical "I wish that were me" that you see on every image depicting sexual submission. The comment was at -2. My first instinct, which I followed, was to downvote it. That comment is overused and generic anyway, I thought.
Then about a minute later I was looking at another picture. There were four comments on it, the second of which was basically "I wish that were me". But this time, my first instinct was to upvote it. Why? It was at +9.

So basically, when one sees an upvotes comment one often assumes it must be good and upvotes it, while when when sees a downvoted comment one sees how it could be considered bad and downvotes it, thereby participating in a vicious cycle either way. Whoever votes on a comment when it is at zero has more influence over its fate then any other.

Yes, it's easy to follow an established norm, we do it subconsciously, as social beings. But this doesn't mean it's the only influencing factor. Even the wording plays a huge role. You should have provided the links for referenced images and comments.

Here is an example:
"I sold my body to get this normal life, so don't tell me I don't shine"
actually translates to:
"I'm a whore, so you can't judge me and tell me I'm nothing special"

So, while both sentences actually mean the same thing in the end, they do cause different reactions. One gives you a positive emotion, but the second one is hella annoying.

Voting represents not quality, but popularity. Popularity reflects taste. Tastes differ. So the same thing can be upvoted here and be downvoted there. It's a random matter, but under a NSFW image you can meet more of a certain type of people, than under a safe image. So "location" also matters.

And yet another example of how this works:

Given how nowdays votes are used in comments section and more, honestly i think that it would be better to remove this option, instead of getting used to it or just enable your blacklist for those..

When i see a bad comment wich is downvoted already, it's not like i add another downvote, specially if i can upvote a comment that doesn't follow the previous one..
As for pics there was also a thread about how much downvoted are the new pics of Naruto, but this actually happens in various series too even if there's no need to.

In these cases, it helps being a hipster wanting to be different from everyone else.

www.unblockyoutube.co.uk

Copy the video link and put it in the bar, but the comments wouldn't load (at least for me).

The scores don't mean much as someone can use proxies and vote as much as they want as well.

I recommend the Youtube Unblocker Plus add-on for firefox.
It's a clip from Bakemonogatari and shows Hachikuji and Araragi discussing how abominable things can sound cool, if you just throw in the word "courage". The courage to betray your comrades, for instance. It implies things, without any proof and yet results in a push into the opposite (positive) spectrum.

Yes, that's perceptive of you, and basically describes the media-saturated world around you, not least of all politics: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudge_theory

Have you ever stopped to consider that you're just not as smart as you think you are?
