Using English names for human Pokemon characters
Posted on: 09/12/16 11:53AM

Yeah, I know, but Pokemon is a global franchise, and we already use the English names for the Pokemon themselves.

A little consistency would be nice. It's a pain to have to look up a human character's Japanese name whenever you want to upload an image containing them.

It's a global tag policy to always use the Japanese name for characters. If anything, using the English name for the Pokemon themselves is what's inconsistent, not the other way around.

That said, Danbooru would also need to change their policy and start using the English names before we could.

Why not apply an alias for them?

Our alias system doesn't work right. We stopped adding new things to it for fear it may break our site or at the very least risk spending days at a time rebuilding our search index/database.

That's not a real argument but I see what you are getting at. Indeed the names of the Pokemon monsters should indeed be made into Japanese ones. Only real reason this is not fixed is because Danbooru isn't doing it. As is there is around 721 Pokemon monsters. That means that we would manually have to change and then alias that many names. Aside from time and a LOT of effort/work, there isn't really anything that should stop us from doing this.

The only real problem is Danbooru.

So if you want the Pokemon monster names to be fixed, go convince Danbooru mods.

Though pokemon themselves get English names used...

And Nintendo characters for one tend to be either way. It is not very consistent.

I gave up trying to remember the new Rosalina tag, so I just flat out never search for her anymore.

Real glad we use english names for the Pokemon because if they switched to Japanese names I'd just give up ever looking for them or uploading anything related to them from then on.

Its already hard enough finding more than half the human cast because of it.
