And yet, despite us never having had any active or aggressive advertisements previously (if any snuck onto the site, we'd have them pulled the second we found out about them), adblock usage was skyrocketing. We wouldn't need to use aggressive behavior if adblock usage hadn't gotten out of hand first. Ads are the only way the site has to pay for server costs and software development. No ad views = no site.

I agree they are aggressive, and I've spoken to the network about it, but this is the only way they can serve popunders now (according to them). I find them annoying as well, and you can always disable them in your account options. I, however, view every advertisement zone on the site, every day, making sure none being displayed are malicious. Obviously I don't have access to every geolocation, so I can't test every place on the planet, but I do my best.
