You don't need a super long engine compartment to have a contraprop, later model Spitfires had contraprops and the only difference with them was a slightly longer spinner. That machinery is in front of the engine, not behind it (unless it's a pusher design). The most logical explanation for a front end that big is for a lot of fuel stored in the fuselage, allowing for thinner wings (although that could be disastrous if a bullet hits the tanks, and it's a big target). Takeoffs and landings would also be pretty scary without a periscope or tricycle landing gear because you wouldn't see shit when it was flared. Actually tricycle gear is another possible explanation.

Back part kind of reminds me of a Mitsubishi J2M.
