@1073043 Their original names are Red, Green (rival) and Blue (girl). Green being the girl and Blue the rival was a misstranslation.

So it goes:

Red - Green bulbasaur
Green - Red charmander
Blue - Blue squirtle

Red and Green are tied up because of what they represent: Satoshi Tajiri and Shigeru Miyamoto, besides, Green received type advantage because, in the words of Satoshi Tajiri: "Satoshi (Red) will never be superior to Shigeru (Green)".

For some fans, GSC/HGSS games proved otherwise, but being alone in a cold mountain with no human contact and obsess yourself over Pokémon Training isn't exactly a happy ending: Satoshi Tajiri has Asperguer Syndrome, which is characterized by difficult social interaction, lack of empathy, restricted and repetitive interest and behavior and abnormal speech. Now think about Red...

Now you learned something new.

It isn't exactly mistranslation: the name change between Blue and Green was the result of the versions released in Japan and the U.S. Japan got Red and Green first, thus the Rival was named Green, while Blue version came out after with some minor upgrades. The U.S. on the other hand never got the original Green, only Blue with Red updated to match, thus why the Rival's name was changed to Blue.
