He was pretty chummy with them during the Clone Wars, and considering the troops under his command were the remnants of the 501st Legion it's not beyond believable that he would feel bad for their deaths.

Come to think of it, whatever happened to Captain Rex after the Empire rose to power? Star Wars Battlefront 2 seems to have him leading the 501st through most of the Galactic Civil War, but there's not much detail. Maybe the books have something on it. Does anyone know?
