Anon5 I vote you're right... sure the characters have changed throughout the rebuild series... but by the end of 3.0, they're back to their old selves... (with some minor differences)
Asuka being take-charge, loud and ever condecending. (Tho she's more mature)
Rei being emotionless and drone-like. (Tho further clueless)
Shinji being again reclusive and alone. (Tho heartbroken)

It probably wont have an all-out group hug...but its pretty obvious Shinji isnt hated beyond hope by Asuka or Misato, in fact anything but that; more like distance and hurt because of passed time and freshly opened wounds.
I´m actually almost certain that if there will be any hugging going on in FINAL, its going to be between Shinji and Misato. Asuka is too tsun tsun to do anything that flashy. She might just drop the "brat" and go back to "idiot".
