She cut her hair because it's kind of an old tradition for Japanese (and maybe Chinese) girls to cut their long hair after a heartbreak!
Something of a new beginning and new image I think?
It's a dramatic device still sometimes seen in shoujo manga...err...not that I ever read that stuff of course! >.>
