I can't possibly see why carrying LESS sand would make his abilities more effective. Besides, the sand that is possessed by Karura's spirit (and thus is more powerful than any extra sand he can create/control, as well as automatically protecting him) was clearly stated to have a finite mass earlier in the series. He literally shouldn't be able to reduce the amount unless he took half of it and is using it to fill a catbox.

Seals, dunderhead. You can store away a lake-worth of water, a giant fox, a chakra nuke, why would you want to carry giant gourd when you can use a smaller and lighter one to the same effect?

Bit late, but why wouldn't it work? Quantity and output potentially are far greater. The seals are in the gourd; gourd holds greater volume due to storage seals and funnels/breaks up as necessary, or so was meant I reckon. No need to haul around giant paperweight, no need to miserly ration charged sand used.
