They had heard that a village was under attack, and they went off.

They heard that the monster killed the men it came across, but didn't kill the women, so they hurried off.

Now they are at the monster's mercy, and are going to be getting off, over and over.

Perhaps next time they will learn patience? Or if they manage to defeat the monster, they will look for its egg, and train the young properly.
