This could work if the rounds were pulled into the chamber rather than pushed, in a sort of reverse stripper-clip. Assuming the cartridges are not bottlenecked, this might reduce the chance of a jam, with the tips of the bullets being further apart. Bottlenecked ammunition wouldn't see any significant benefit.

Or it could just be a battery.

No, the reverse magazine would work, the cartridges would be loaded in a reverse manner to what we're all familiar with. That way the magazine would not hang down to get caught on anything.
