Because each color is dot is a different mobile suit from gundam.

It's not the first cameos for gundam in Ange either.
In the shopping area in one of the earlier episodes you can see the shields for the Strike gundam and one of it's rifles as well.
A couple episodes before this one there was a motel with Mu La Flaga's name in neon lights.
And earlier in the episode this pic references, you can see Kira and Lacus plushies in the crane game machine.

That should NOT be a big surprise..this series was made by Sunrise...who also did Gundam seed/destiny.
