Back when Sonic was cool. They need to fix his gameplay (by not trying to constantly "fix" it) before we worry about him ever being cool again though.

The good Sonic games after this one were the Advance and Rush titles, Heroes, Battle which is basically a Sonic version of Smash Bros, Colors, and Generations. The others like Shadow The Hedgehog, Sonic Unleashed, and Lost World have mixed receptions, but I personally enjoyed all of them.
