I would wager to say that this is still "fan" art. What I mean is, pictures like this where a character is badly hurt or otherwise in danger I feel can trigger a response from people that givens them a inclination to rescue them. An empathy trigger, which for some people correlates with their sexuality when in this context.
I speak mainly from personal anecdotes, as even going as far back to being a kid I'd fantasize about a video game character I liked and picture her in an undesirable situation and feel like I would be the one to save and nurse her wounds so to speak. How that makes my dick hard is something I can't really answer.
