Hm... considering the monkeys I'd guess it's a joke to the fact that some people in Japan supposedly thought Ike's new look was "Apish", or maybe I just heard that somewhere or am completely wrong.

Regardless, Ike is not amused.

Anon 2 is half right. Apparently in Japan, Ike's design in Radiant Dawn received the fan nickname of "Gorillaguz" on account of how buff he got between games.

Considering Sm4sh uses said design, the Kongs probably took a liking to him, considering him an honorary Kong or something.
