Kobold's were tiny house and mine goblins in their original germanic lore. Not quite a gnome, not quiet a brownie. Their whole thing was being loyal domestic servants. The weird thing is how much they very from fiction to fiction. Dungeons and Dragon's (and every high fantasy setting that was inspired by D&D) portrays them as tiny lizard men. On the other hand, eastern fictions tend to treat them more like mammals. They're moles in FFXIV, rats in Warcraft, and popularly dogs in the Monster Girl community.
