Even tho this is the literal ending of the anime, it also explains absolutely nothing. In fact, you're more likely to be more lost and confused by this than watching most endings.

The best way to sum up the ending to Evangelion as a whole is this.
The stuff that's actually happening in the world and all that is End of Evangelion.
The ending to the anime is what's going on in Shinji's mind as the events of End of Evangelion are happening.

The best way to sum up the ending to Evangelion as a whole is this.
They fucking ran out of money. Anno tried to play it off like he meant to do it that way but took it up the ass from the disappointed fans, he was butthurt about it but knew he had to at least make it look like he was trying to redeem himself and knew there was enough demand to make a lot of money off of it. So he made a brutal, disturbing movie that he knew would not only be controversial and therefore keep everyone talking about it, but would also be as final as possible to keep people from pestering him for more.
Then 10 years passed and he noticed Hollywood was remaking the same movie franchises every few years, so he was like, what the hell, why not.
