That is never actually stated in the game, so they could be either, but the general consensus among Undertale fans is that Frisk(the MC's default name) is a girl.

They could be either, honestly.
General consensus aside, they probably intentionally left the sex of main character ambiguous. And honestly, it's probably for the best. It's not that important of an aspect of the game anyway.
