I think it has to do with the notion that "feminists" were "triggered" the eggplant emoji everybody uses to indicate a penis. It's as petty as it sounds on both ends.

Even though Ice Climber came in in the mid-80s and the Ice Climbers' logo was indicated as an eggplant in Melee in 2001. Vegetables with googly eyes is sort of their thing.
