Kamina survives the battle with Timulph, then goes on to pass the mantle of leadership to Simon. Simon doesn't mature AS MUCH as he would have with Kamina dead, but he gets pretty damn close. Kamina reaches 3rd base with Yoko, and lives to help in the fight against the Anti-Spiral. (Just imagine how much more powerful Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann would have been!) After they beat the Anti-Spiral, Kamina makes it release Nia from it's grip.
So, Nia and Kamina both live on, and we get the picture above.
