well, in ACTUAL medieval combat, due to the heavy plate armor of knights, it was sometimes more effective to bash the opponent with the pommel of the sword as if it where a mace since it was heavy enough to work as such.

of course, this has absolutely nothing to do with fiction but hey, the more you know

That is correct, the style is called Mordhau and it's a German technique.
