There is not nearly enough CB porn out there. Not nearly enough. Makes me wonder if it was more popular in the U.S. at the time of its release and a few years after than it was in Japan.

That's always been the case, anon2. If I remember right the series was shown out of order in Japan which hurt it. But in the USA it was shown as intended and it garnered a much larger audience.

Does the order really matter? It's not like Cowboy Bebop is really story-driven by a single interlacing narrative.

It may be episodic, but aside from a few filler episodes the order does matter when it comes to building the characters.

Besides, as I understand it the issue wasn't that it was shown out of order, but was actually cancelled midway through its run, with a clip-show episode aired to (temporarily) wrap things up:

"Due to the violence portrayed in the Cowboy Bebop world and violence in Japanese schools, the series was briefly cancelled and an extra session was created as a final episode to the first thirteen episodes aired. Called "Session XX: Mish-Mash Blues," a compilation of clips from previous episodes, it aired on June 26, 1998 on TV Tokyo. The episode was never released on DVD. In it, the characters provide a philosophical commentary and end with the words: This Is Not The End. You Will See The Real "Cowboy Bebop" Someday!"
