More on topic, since this is just a slideshow and not truly animated, could the animated tag simply be removed? I feel it's justified here, since these are clearly till images pieced together in a (rather poor) attempt to give the illusion of animation.

No, the "animated" tag stays. There is no lower threshold for the framerate of an animation. This is an animation, and we have many other slideshow animations on the site that keep the tag.
