She's holding naan, Indian flatbread. The comic depicts that she's really trying hard to make people laugh at a pun.
'Bread' in japanese is 'pan'. 'Nan' means 'what'.
'Kore wa nan desu ka?' - What is this?
'Pan desu.' - It's bread.
But since it's naan bread, Ellen is trying to make the pun, 'kore wa naan desu' - This is naan bread.
So saying 'What is this supposed to be?' is said the same way as 'This is naan bread.'
Top right:
Ellen: 'Bread is bread, but what/naan kind of bread needs curry to be bread?!'
Girl: 'Curry bread.'
Top left:
Ellen: 'Bread is bread, but if... um... you don't have curry...'
Indian woman: 'Naan bread doesn't need to be served with curry!'
Bottom right:
Boy: 'What's that?/Is that naan?'
Ellen: 'Bread is bread, but... oh! Yes. This is naan bread./What do you suppose this is. ...Oops.'
Bottom left:
Boy: 'Sorry, but what were we talking about?/Were we talking about naan?'
Ellen: 'Enough already. It's nothing./It's not naan.'
