Before Jaune and Pyrrha started to have chemistry, I felt Jaune and Ruby could potentially be a thing. They were both all alone and out of their element upon first arriving at Beacon (compare to Yang who had friends from her previous school; Ruby skipped ahead of her peers and arrived alone. And Jaune... well... he's Jaune.) This ship took the back seat, but did occasionally have a few small glimpses at being possible, such as the "toast to the socially awkward" at the school dance.
Basically, I think if Ruby gets together with anyone, it'd make more sense for it to be Jaune. Pyrrha's death hit them both hard; Ruby WATCHED HER DIE, and Jaune... well... he's Jaune. At the same time, though, I'd be totally fine if they never hooked up and just stayed single throughout the rest of the series. Not everyone needs to be shipped.

People like Jaune because Human Nature tends to have us root for the underdog. Jaune is literally the epitome of an underdog as he was probably the weakest hunter in general at Beacon. But he also develops as a character. we come to like him more as we see him struggle to find his place, not only as a hunter, but also as a leader of a team of what can be argued as the strongest team of their year, if you dont count Team RWBY since they're the main characters.
