Actually, there's evidence that T-rex indeed had a sophisticated sense of smell, but that's really beside the point because this whole thing is a Jurassic Park joke, which isn't supposed to be scientifically accurate by any means.
It's funny though, because in The Lost World (the book), a guy gets eaten because he follows Dr. Grant's advice and doesn't move. They explain that the only reason Grant survived in the first book is because the Rex wasn't hungry anymore - which is still silly, just look at the size of that thing. One goat and half a human couldn't possibly fill it up.
