Yeah it's no different than the previous 3rd games, same protagonist with different clothing.

BW2 is the only game that's a direct sequel, thus having different protagonist all together.

According to Game Freak, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's story is an alternate version of the events of Sun and Moon, with the protagonist moving to Alola one year later than they did in the original games.
So it's more akin to a third version.
