It'd be pretty cool if they made it that your Rival's gender could be chosen just like your Avatar's gender.
Though I think that wouldn't be able to truly work unless they went back to the likes of Gen 1 or 2 with the idea of Rivals, ie you only have the one significant Rival instead of multiple ones.
