@anon2: While I cannot exactly disagree with you, the games have improved over the years. Gen1 had plenty of flaws, I honestly don't think anyone can deny it (except for hardcore genwunners), it did give us the basis of what the franchise would become. I do understand that for many people, gen1 holds a special place in their hearts (if mostly for nostalgic reasons), but I still prefer to think that it laid down the groundwork for what would ultimately become one of the most popular franchises in the world. The 2 main things that gen1 had going for it were, imo: 1) It encouraged kids to get together to play the games by trading or battling each other, and 2) Even back then, the series had creatures that pretty much anyone could like no matter what they were into. This was what made the games good back then, and is why they are still great to this day.

Gen 1 is buggy as shit and its balancing is broken beyond belief. But it still was successful enough to spawn a whole franchise, so what can ya do.
Fire Red and Leaf Green are still the best way to experience Kanto though, so there's no reason to ever play the original games.
