There is currently a transparent material called Alon( Aluminium oxynitride) being manufactured today which at 1cm can stop a .50cal bullet cold and be in usable shape making it comparable in weight and durability to ballistic body armor plates. Comes in squares, cylinders and hem-spheres currently.
