The Air Force is tsundere for the A-10. The top brass has actually tried repeatedly since the 1990s to kill the program and take them out of service but have never succeeded because no other aircraft can fill the A-10's role effectively and the planes are already bought and paid for. They wanted to make a dedicated attack version of the F-16 and replace the A-10 with it, then Congress looked at the price tag and was like, "Uh, no. You just said the future was stealth, why are you buying a million more F-16s?"
Then they said an anti-tank aircraft was obsolete because we weren't going to fight battles against Soviet tanks and helicopters could do the job, and then we invaded Afghanistan and it scared the shit out of the Taliban and the troops were like "Don't you dare take it away, this thing is keeping us alive."
Then when the sequestration cuts hit the budget they tried to kill the A-10 again to save money and Congress was like "What? To replace it with the F-35? That thing that's 10 years overdue and billions of dollars over budget?"
