Not that Monika didn't do anything wrong - it was cruel, selfish, and tantamount to murder - but given her circumstances, she's hard not to empathize with. She deserved her chance at a happy ending, and thus, deserved to be loved, in regards to the game's plot.

In regards to reality? Well, you shouldn't love a drawing or a fictional character romantically. SHOULDN'T. But the fact that Monika, who murdered her own friends just to try to be with you, is still written with more humanity than most actual humans these days, makes it easy to understand why people do. It's not worrying that people love a cartoon character anymore - it's worrying that humanity has become so self-centered and filled with hatred for any who disagree, especially given the modern political climate, that loving a character like Monika over actual people begins to make sense.
