Yeah, I always thought Pikachu was a girl too!

In season one they stressed like crazy that Pikachu was an "IT"! That pretty much let the fans choose Pikachu's gender.

Then when Diamond and Pearl was released all that changed when they added one "love struck" Buneary that was clearly a girl.

Buneary going for Pikachu didn't prove anything, however, a female Togepi used a powerful Attract in a later episode, which everyone but Jessie's female Yanmega went for, proving that particular Pikachu's gender once and for all.
