It could be that the snake wasn't "planning" on attacking her, and was instead just lazing around. When it noticed her, it attacked right away (without her being able to react fast enough, even if she did perceive its intentions). It's not like snakes stalk prey and think "yeah that one there, I wanna eat that one, I hope it comes close".
