Idk if there's backstory to it, but uh... It seems they wrote Ume's name backwards... Maybe it's a western artist who thinks you write Japanese right to left, or maybe that's what happens in the show.

Pre-1946 Japanese orthography treats horizontal writing as one-line verticals, so it would indeed be read right-to-left. It's how Shimakaze got her Zekamashi nickname. Ume's name is written "backwards" only from the modern orthography.
