Red IS NOT Ash. Even in the Japanese version of the anime, Ash's name isn't Red, because he's NOT Red. His name in the Japanese version is Satoshi.

And this here is Red, not Ash. They are two completely different characters.

Actually there have been theories proposed that ash is red's little brother. Ash is quite apparently retarded so he had two gym leaders arranged to help him on his journey after ash met them and then sent his pikachu back to Pallet. This explains why 2 Gym Leaders with important jobs drop everything and travel with ash, also why when he got pikachu it hated him and was so freakishly overpowered.

Red and Ash are NOT the same person. In the Japanese anime, Ash is "Satoshi".

Please refer to "Pokemon Origins". It's the anime that follows Red, rather than Ash.

Isn't Ash just simply based on Red and they are sort of the same person, though Ash his own persona and an arguable different personality? (In which many games with silent protagonists', you project yourself on to them so they can have any personality you want them to, same for Zelda).

I suppose you could say Manga Red and Anime Ash are different people, but their appearance and hometown are pretty much similar.
