My guess is that "Merou" is the tranliteration of "Merrow" which is in some Irish folktales as a type of "mermaid", the males are supposed to be butt ugly but the females are attractive and thus seek to steal away handsome human males who stray too close to the seashore cause they're better looking than the guy Merrows.
