Until you play the second game.
Its like WWII, they were arguably in the right when it started but went FAR to far in the end making themselves the bad guys.
Rico is an idiot though and re-inspired the Helgast to arms.
Don't get me wrong I fucking love these guys (Hackah was the best character imo) but its also true.

But you have to realize why they would do that kind of stuff. They were slaughtered, forced onto a death planet, and had most if not all ways off the planet restricted. Pretty much everyone on the planet died, and the only ones left were obviously pretty pissed over the ISA's attempted genocide of the Helghast. Not to mention the fact that the ISA end up nuking the Helghasts' home world of Helghan, and kill over one billion sentients. And then the ISA go so far as to claim moral superiority when they started the war because they were worried that the Helghast would attack them.
