Bringing the good old past time icons together with the new ones, that is GENIUS! Infinite/10 stars! :D
Would be great if there was some kind of game where all these guys and gals could meet... oh wait, there is: M.U.G.E.N! :P

OK, so..:
2nd row, far far left, Blonde girl? Wendy from Brawl Brothers.
Same background, left of Smash Daisaku, guy with bionic arm? Colonel Bahamut from Contra Hard Corps.
Same area, down from Metal Slug Alien, with mask and chainsaw? Chainsaw Maniac from Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
Boxer's Stage, left of Arthur? Gomez Addams, from the Addams Family SNES title.
Lastly, far right and bottom background: the "Final Fatasy" characters are Celeste Cherie (in her opera dress), Locke Cole, and Edgar Figaro -using his Chainsaw tool.

3 years on and I've been able to find room for yet another two tags. Awesome.
Zool from the game of the same name is doing a handstand on Barney's head (near the middle) and the purple haired protagonist of "Crystalis" (default name of Simon in the GBC remake) is ontop of the cafe, to the lower right from the middle of the picture.
I'd add a note for them too but I've no idea now and can't figure it out.
