The device itself doesn't break them. They have to be sawn apart and then spaced close enouth to 'attract' them to grow towards each other.
The device is then beeing expanded while the bone is still 'soft' in the gap so they follow it thus getting longer.
But that's the minority it's beeing used for, tha majority would be to realign shattered bones after an accident so the arm/leg heals straight.
