It is Imaishi_Hiroyuki's directorial debut and Imaishi also designed the characters for the film. The techno soundtrack is composed by Ike Yoshihiro and Asakura Daisuke. The film is written by Honda Takeichi. Pandy, a punkish woman with a purple facial mark on her right eye, and Retro, a young man with a television for a head, awaken on Earth amnesiac and naked. The two of them decide to start a crime spree in order to get some food, transportation, and clothing, but they are soon caught by the police. They are shipped to a prison on the moon called Dead Leaves. The two of them, as well as the prisoners, endure brutal and humiliating treatment. Pandy and Retro bond and fall in love with each other while in captivity. Eventually the two of them are fed up with life at Dead Leaves and they orchestrate a prison break with the rest of the prisoners. Pandy, Retro, and the prisoners engage in an all out battle with the prison's security and along the way Pandy and Retro uncover who they really are. The film is full of Imaishi's trademark sexual innuendo, exaggerated action scenes, and frantic pacing. Imaishi's fascination with drills also rears its head here as the film features a character who literally has a drill for a penis. Imaishi's next directorial effort Gurren Lagann would use a similar gag in episode 6 to censor Simon's nudity. The character designs are often outlandish and suggestive looking with one character who has a head shaped like two testicles and there is even a trail of semen coming out of the top of his head. The film is also considerably bloodier than Imaishi's other directorial efforts and the action scenes often have quite a few outlandish and gory deaths. The English dub notably adds a lot more dialogue, mostly more humorous lines, to the film in contrast to the original Japanese version.
