Now Viewing: evil_deadTag type: Copyright Cult American film franchise. It is notable for establishing director Sam Raimi and lead actor Bruce Campbell's film careers. Sam Raimi directed the original three films. A TV series titled Ash vs Evil Dead premiered on October 31, 2015, and acts as a sequel to the films. The series originated as a short student film called Within the Woods made by Raimi and featuring Campbell in 1978. This student film is not considered part of the Evil Dead canon, but the film was remade as the original Evil Dead movie in 1981. Ashley J. Williams, played by Bruce Campbell, heads to a log cabin in the middle of a forest with his friends including his girlfriend Linda for a vacation in a nice and quiet area. The friends discover a strange book in the cabin along with a tape recorder and out of curiosity they decide to play the recorder. The tape recorder was left behind by a professor and a previous inhabitant of the cabin and consists of the professor reciting chants in this book. This soon proves to be the worst decision the friends have made as the incantations summon demons that proceed to possess the friends with the first victim being Ash's sister Cheryl, turning her into a Deadite. For Ash, the next few days and nights become a living hell as he struggles to survive against the demons' onslaught. The first film was produced with a minuscule budget for a feature length movie of 350,000 US Dollars. This contributed to a rather brutal filming process. The success of the first film led to two film sequels and a 2013 remake with larger budgets. While the films were not blockbuster successes, they have inspired a large cult fan base and influenced a lot of subsequent media. Many of Ash's macho boasts and wise cracks from the third film Army of Darkness are often directly quoted and homaged. Juliet Starling from Lollipop Chainsaw can even dress up as Ash from this film series. Mass Effect also has a female character named Ash Williams who is an homage to this series protagonist. Quite a few of Duke Nukem's lines are direct quotes of lines Ash said in the Evil Dead films like "Come get some!" and "Hail to the King, baby." The series has also received video game and comic book adaptations as well as a stage musical. Each film has a different tone and genre. The first Evil Dead film is a serious horror movie, the second movie blends horror and comedy, the third movie (Army of Darkness) drops most of the horror and is instead an action comedy, and the 2013 remake returns to being a horror movie. The original movie is notoriously violent and featured a brutal tree rape scene, but the sequels play the violence for more comedic value. The original three films are directly linked and each sequel continues immediately after the previous one ends. However, each sequel starts with a condensed recap of the previous movies. Instead of reusing footage, new scenes are shot and the new footage has created some minor inconsistencies even though the new footage does capture the general idea of what happened in the previous film. Nevertheless, the films, with some editing, can be put together into one long and mostly consistent movie. The films also has a distinctive way of filming chase scenes. Ash and co. are often menaced by supernatural forces in the forest. Instead of showing the supernatural force itself, these chase scenes are shot from the point of view of the demons so the camera will often shake a little and appear to be rapidly zooming in closer to the actors. These scenes will be accompanied by an ominous sound representing the monsters.
