She was first introduced in the first NES Ninja Gaiden where she manages to get the drop on Ryu who underestimates her abilities. She is a mysterious CIA agent who goes by the name Agent Sea Swallow who seems to be fulfilling her own agenda. Ryu is suspicious of her and the CIA in general at first, but the two grow to trust each other over the course of Ryu's adventure and Ryu manages to rescue her from Jacquio and his minions. Ryu's suspicions of the CIA turn out to be correct, but Sea Swallow decides to abandon the final mission her boss tasks her with because she and Ryu have fallen in love and she reveals her true name to be Irene Lew. After the first game, she continues to assist Ryu. Although she is a CIA agent, she is not as good as Ryu in fending off the series' supernatural enemies and she often needs to be rescued by Ryu. She is a brown haired woman who often dresses in a suit and uses guns and ties her hair into a ponytail. The Ninja Gaiden series was revived in 2004 by Itagaki Tomonobu and Team Ninja. The XBOX games were set prior to the NES games, however, there did not seem to be a direct connection between the newer Ninja Gaiden games and the older ones. In the XBOX Ninja Gaiden 2/Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, a character named Sonia was introduced. She was a blonde and busty woman who wore lipstick. She was a CIA agent who specialized in using guns, assisted Ryu throughout his adventure, and by the end of the game the two of them had developed feelings for each other and the two of them embraced each other whereas Ryu did not show much romantic interest in the previous game's heroine Rachel. Fans noted that although Sonia did not look like Irene Lew, she was remarkably similar to her in every other aspect. As of Dead_or_Alive Dimensions, Sonia has been confirmed to be a redesigned Irene Lew and the name Sonia is actually an alias. 'Sonia' is referred to as Irene in her subsequent appearances. Although she and Ryu are in a relationship, it appears that their relationship is mostly a secret. In Dead or Alive Dimensions, other characters watching Ryu and Irene's interaction find their relationship peculiar and speculate as to what is going on with them. Ayane in Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge angrily asks Irene why she is so fixated on Ryu and Irene vaguely replies that she knows Ryu better than Ayane. Despite being a recurring character and capable of combat, she has yet to be playable in any Ninja Gaiden or Dead or Alive game.
