The eponymous pale-skinned and dark-haired protagonist of the action game Bayonetta. She is a tall bespectacled British-accented witch who quadruple wields guns (2 on her hands, 2 attached to her legs) and fights using her magic hair which can be used to summon monsters or transform into giant fists or feet and lots of other things. Her default costume is also made of her hair even though it resembles a leather catsuit. She is physically much stronger than she appears to be and has little trouble lifting a three headed dragon off the ground or head butting a large chunk of a skyscraper. Her battles often take place in a sort of alternate dimension that is invisible to normal humans. While the combatants are invisible to normal humans, the destruction that results is visible. Time also passes differently within this dimension so a battle that lasts for several minutes during gameplay/cutscenes turns out to have taken place within fractions of a second when Bayonetta returns to the normal time dimension. She is as fast as she is powerful and can activate a special witch time mode whenever she dodges an attack or when faced with a situation that requires super speed to escape from. She was a member of the defunct Umbra Witches who all seem to have roughly the same fighting style. Whenever she encounters an especially powerful enemy like a boss, her hair will unravel and hang below her knees and her attacks will become much stronger. Her appearance in this extra powerful state is based off of an alternate default design for the character. She can also use her magic to control objects like controlling the direction of a giant missile she's using as an improvised vehicle or starting up a motorcycle simply by sticking her middle finger in the key hole.

She has a beehive hairdo and a rather large butt, which gets plenty of focus throughout the game as it has a third person perspective; the camera tends to linger on it during cutscenes. In Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta changes her hairstyle to a short haired look. In Bayonetta 3, Bayonetta grows out her hair and wears it down, with her hair draping down her shoulders and styled into two lengthy pigtails reminiscent of Cereza's hairstyle. She wears a black dress with black stockings covering her legs.

She begins the game amnesiac and she discovers who she really is and recovers more of her magical powers.

She is rude and sarcastic towards the Angels, rarely allowing them a chance to finish talking and generally being irreverent towards them. She also has a bit of a sadistic streak and often dispatches the Angels in painful and humiliating ways and is generally quite fond of fighting. Nevertheless, she has a soft spot for Cereza and Luka though she is fond of teasing the latter and had a very close friendship with Jeanne.

Besides her formidable fighting prowess, she is also a skilled dancer and incorporates dance moves into combat. Like her fighting techniques, she is proficient in wide variety of dancing styles, including figure skating, breakdancing, and pole-dancing. She can also shoot at the same time she is performing dance moves. She is very confident in her abilities and often strikes poses and taunts during battle. Her fighting style has dominatrix overtones and some of her torture attacks resemble femdom practices.

She seems to like lollipops and is constantly sucking on one throughout the game.

Her glasses are often considered by the creators and fans to be a big part of her character and appeal and in the first game, her face sans glasses is never seen onscreen.

Her theme song is Mysterious Destiny, which is sung by Helena Noguerra.

She is one of the most popular characters created by Clover Studios/Platinum Games and has made the most appearances out of their characters. She appears as a guest fighter in the game Anarchy Reigns/Max Anarchy if the player preorders the game from Japan as well as DLC and uses new moves that were cut from her own game. In Max Anarchy, she is the only character with explicit magic powers; the elemental powers other characters have are the result of cybernetic enhancements or other high tech gadgets. She returns as a guest character in another Platinum Games product The Wonderful 101 where she is an unlockable character alongside Jeanne and Rodin. She was also a highly requested character for the Sega crossover racing game Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed though she did not make the cut. However, she is a playable character in the fourth Super Smash Bros. game, making her the second character, behind Solid Snake, from a more adult-targeted video game franchise to appear alongside characters from more family friendly games. Like Snake, her attacks and mannerisms are toned down to fit in with the family-friendly nature of the game: Bayonetta doesn't reveal as much skin when she uses her summons and refrains from profanity-laced taunts. She was also the number one choice in fan ballots worldwide for potential playable fighters, which is why she was ultimately included as a fighter. She has a combo-heavy fighting style reflecting the Bayonetta franchise's gameplay emphasis on pulling off spectacular combos.

As she is from the same creator, stars in a hack and slash action game, and has a similar appeal, she often appears in fan art alongside Dante from Devil May Cry. Kamiya, in a April 2009 interview, described Bayonetta as his ideal woman. Designer Shimazaki also preferred Bayonetta though she noted that quite a few of her fellow developers preferred Jeanne.

Bayonetta was designed to be a contemporary take on a witch so she uses guns instead of wands and wears a beehive hairdo instead of a pointy witch hat.

She is voiced by British voice actress Hellena Taylor (games) and Tanaka_Atsuko (anime and JPN dub), She is motion captured by dancer Uchida Maiko. Her work impressed the game's creators so much that Kamiya added a secret ending dance video at the end of the first game to further showcase Uchida's dancing. For Bayonetta 3, Taylor was replaced by Canadian voice actress Jennifer Hale who affects a British accent to maintain consistency. The sudden change in voice actress was due to a pay dispute between Taylor and the developers with the former feeling she wasn't being paid enough for the work the latter required of her.
